2) Family cycling route
The easy family cycling route is suitable for anyone, including the youngest cyclists. Follow the macadam country roads to the nearby Ribnica Valley villages and stop at one of the must-see sights along the way: the Škrabec Homestead in the village of Hrovača, the birthplace of Father Stanislav Škrabec, a famed Slovenian lingust. The homestead complex is a one-of-a-kind venue for cultural events. The interior of Škrabec‘s birth house can be visited by prior arrangement.

3) Below Bukovica
A short family cycling route, which leads past the source of the river Ribnica, is mostly a forest cycling route, which is a good choice for anyone, including the youngest cyclists. At Ribnica‘s source, which is a veritable oasis of calm, you can admire the wonderful colour of the water, which turns turquoise when bathed in sunshine. The short cycling route is well worth a visit.

4) Travna gora and Nova Štifta
A slightly more challenging cycling route leads past the mountain hut on the Travna Gora plateau, where you can relax and recharge your batteries while observing nature and the surrounding peaks. The rest of the route follows an asphalt road. One of sights to see on the way is the pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary at Nova Štifta, which dates back to the 17th century. While there, you can see a magnificent linden tree growing right next to the church and go up to a tree house in the linden‘s canopy to admire a wonderful view.

5) Up hill and down to Loški potok
The cycling route leads through Loški Potok, past steep slopes, high plateaus and unspoiled nature. Enjoy the shade of mighty spruce trees, breathe in the fresh mountain air and admire the beautiful nature. Along the way, you may notice two special species of spruce trees that grow in the area, i.e. the snakebranch spruce (picea abies cranstonii) and the golden spruce (picea sitchensis aurea).

6) Tour arround the Velika Gora Plateau
The cycling route is suitable for all lovers of steep slopes and challenging uphill rides. It leads past the settlement of Jelenov Žleb, where you can see a monument to fallen World War II soldiers, and Glažuta, named after a former glassworks and the site of the first steam boiler in the historical region of Carniola. The route is suitable for road bikes and cyclists with a reasonable level of fitness.

7) Tour arround The Mala Gora Range Past Črni vrh
Cycle along macadam country roads and explore the forests of the Mala Gora range and enjoy the views of nearby and faraway Slovenian peaks. Part of the route to the Črni Vrh peak runs along the Ribnica Mountain Trail. Črni vrh is considered to be the highest point of Mala gora, which is well worth a visit. Come and see it for yourself.

8) Tour arround The Mala Gora with a visit to the church of st. Ana
A longer version of the tour around the Mala Gora range is a bit more challenging. This is an up-and down mountain bike tour on macadam roads and dirt tracks. It requires quite a bit of cycling fitness and is therefore recommended for well-prepared cyclists. If you like to explore and go off the beaten track, you can also head to the Church of St. Ana, which was part of the so-called »fire phone« back in the day, the site of a beacon fire that was part of a network of beacon fires established to warn the people in the Ribnica Valley of the impending Turkish incursions. There is a mountain hut near the church.

9) Grmada and the Ortnek Castle
Take a ride to the mountain hut on the Grmada hill, which boasts fine views of a large part of the Dolenjska region, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, the Karawanks mountain range and the Snežnik plateau. Stop along the way to see the awe-inspiring ruins of the Ortnek Castle (also known as the Old Castle). A bit further down, you can see the ruins of the castle church of St. George from the 17th century. This is a slightly more challenging cycling route and a good way to build up fitness.

10) Slemena circular cycling route
Take a ride around the beautiful Slemena and enjoy some magnificent views that are bound to wow you. While cycling through the village of Sv. Gregor, stop to see the parish church of Saint Gregory the Great, which towers above the village in the north of the Ribnica Plain. The cycling route is waymarked with small red signs that read »Slemenska krožna pot«, i.e. Slemena Circular Cycling Route.

11) Rudnik Lake (Rudniško jezero)
An up-and-down mountain bike trail leads to the Rudnik Lake (Rudniško jezero; literally translated as the Mine Lake) in the heart of the Kočevje area, which was named after a former brown-coal surface mine; surface mining was practiced in this area for 175 years. Forty metres in depth, the Rudnik Lake is one of the cleanest and deepest lakes in Slovenia, and is a great spot for all lovers of swimming, surfing, diving and fishing. A three-kilometre-long educational trail leads around the lake.

12) Kočevska Reka lake (Reško jezero)
By following this slightly more challenging cycling route, you get to relax by the beautiful Kočevska Reka Lake (Reško jezero) in the vicinity of Kočevska Reka. Covering 17.5 hectares, the area is registered as a nature reserve, the habitat of white-tailed eagles. The cycling route is suitable for road bikes.
BEWARE!

The area of Mala and Velika Gora is a natural habitat of brown bears, the largest living carnivores in Slovenian forests. Therefore, we strongly recommend you go on the listed cycling tours in the daytime.
