Report on the activities carried out in the field of sustainable development
The destination Ribnica prides itself as a green destination for a reason, as almost 70% of the area is covered by forests. We are developing tourism towards sustainable development; therefore, the tourist content is strongly connected with nature and the preservation of the cultural heritage of craftsmanship. Here, we present an overview of the activities we carried out in the field of sustainable development between 2020 and 2023.
Internationally recognized environmental certificate
In 2024 the castle Ribnica and Handicraft Centre have been awarded the Green Key certificate for tourist attractions.
SO-RI-KO project
A reliable supply of safe and healthy drinking water was ensured for all resindents of the munucipalities of Ribnica, Sodražica and Kočevje.
The renovation of the Ribnica castle
Through the project “Green Castle Promenade for Active Tourists,” the basic infrastructure of the outdoor areas of Ribnica Castle was renovated in accordance with the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (ZVKD) in 2022.
Restoration of the sculpture “ribniška rajta«
In 2023, the renovation of the wooden sculpture Ribniška rajta, by the academic painter Stanet Jarmo, was successfully completed.
The project Oil is not for the environment
Between 2022 and 2023, a project Oil is not for the environment was implemented to establish a waste oil collection system, purchase appropriate equipment and educations about the importance of environmental protection for local people.
Public tenders for green tourism
For the years 2022 and 2023, we have included sustainability indicators for public tenders in tourism sector.
Organizing green events
In 2024, we organized a major event ‘Safe and Fun’ on Earth Day and a technical day for Ribnica Primary School on the topic of sustainability.

Managing the city bike rental system RICIKEL and the electric mountain bike rental system.
